D.c. Council Committee Advances Significant Minimum Wage Hike

D.C. police officer shot, killed man Monday

The citys minimum-wage plan is almost identical to one being supported in neighboring jurisdictions in Maryland. The county executive in Montgomery County said he would back a council plan this year for $11.50 an hour, and leaders of the County Council in Prince Georges County have expressed confidence they can pass an equal rate, although they recently delayed a vote to see whether the measure would first advance in Montgomery. In the District, however, Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) has opposed the $11.50 hourly rate, as well as the plan to index it to inflation. He has said the council has no economic basis for its proposal, which would lift the minimum in the District alongside, and perhaps above, that in San Francisco, which now has an hourly rate of $10.55 that is indexed to regional inflation. On Friday, Gray proposed a top rate of $10 , mirroring a more modest proposal advanced by the D.C. Chamber of Commerce. Grays plan also omitted indexing; the mayor said the consequences of that have not been studied. Grays resistance, however, may be for naught.

Its hard to know. But while other DC heroes like Superman, Batman , and Green Arrow have enjoyed heady success at the movies and on TV, Aquaman has not: In recent years, his attempts at stardom include a failed pilot at The CW (network insiders say it was awful) and status as a long-running gag on HBOs Entourage (where the central character played Aquaman in a fictional blockbuster). At DC, efforts have been afoot for months to help Aquaman, well, catch a wave. Hes a priority character for the company, said Geoff Johns , DC Entertainments chief creative officer. Already, the company has announced plans for an animated Aquaman tale to be issued soon via DVD. Sales on Johns Aquaman series have remained steady, according to data from Diamond Comic Distributors, and the title routinely places in the top 50 comics sold each month to comic book specialty shops. In October, Aquaman #25 sold about 42,248 copies, according to Comichron, a web site that tracks comic-book sales. Thats a few thousand more comics sold than Marvels cult-favorite archer Hawkeye and even more than former Batman sidekick Nightwing, but fewer than those notched by Batman, The Avengers or The X-Men. Johns is about to wrap up about three years of work on reviving the character strengthening his supporting cast and building an ongoing monthly series.

DC Power for Commercial Buildings

Ever since his creation in 1938, Superman has long been one of DC Comics most long running franchises, one of few which survived the comic censorship era of the late 40’s throughout the 1950’s. Very few artists and writers of the late “Golden Age” of Superman are still with us, and today there is one fewer. Al Plastino, whose work on Superman comics began in 1948 died after a long battle with prostate cancer at the age of 91. His contribution to the “man of steel” cannot be overstated, as he’s responsible for co-creating many characters involved with DC Comics since. Born in 1921, Al Plastino began his career drawing for “Dynamic Comics”, even inking some issues of “Captain America” in the early 1940’s. He wound up serving in WWII himself before officially joining DC Comics in general and Superman in particular in 1948; he drew covers as well as interior art for “Action Comics”, “Superboy”, “Superman”, and “Superman’s Girlfriend, Lois Lane ” through the 1950’s into the early to mid 1960’s. Often working alongside writer Otto Binder, he is best known for drawing “Adventure Comics #247” in 1958 which introduced the “Legion of Super-Heroes” of the 31st century, of which “Superboy” was a founding member, as well as “Action Comics #252” in ’59 that introduced Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin “Supergirl”. Among other well known characters he co-created included Superman villains Brainiac and the John Corben version of Metallo. Spending his later career drawing for syndicated newspaper strips; he drew the “Superman” and “Batman & Robin” newspaper strips during the 1960’s before settling onto “Ferd’nand” until his retirement in 1989.

DC Wants Aquaman To Make A Bigger Splash

Unfortunately, the conversion from AC to DC is often inefficient and results in a loss of power. When using renewable wind or PV energy, additional AC/DC transformations are needed, causing more loss. Added together over many AC/DC conversions and voltage changes, total power losses can surpass 20% in some systems. A growing number of DC power technologies minimize AC/DC conversions and reduce the associated losses. Building managers who installed IP phone systems are expanding their use of power over Ethernet (PoE) to include devices for security, point of access, and wireless networking. Major PoE providers are moving to implement PoE for lighting, monitors, and televisions, and other electronic devices. Bolstered by the standardization efforts of industry groups and growing success at data centers, non-PoE DC technologies are entering into a period of more rapid commercialization and development. Navigant Research forecasts that the global market value for DC power building technologies will grow from $609.1 million in 2013 to $9.7 billion in 2020. This Navigant Research report analyzes the global market opportunity for DC power technologies in commercial buildings.

Moon Knight #1

Police have not released the involved officer’s name. According to D.C. police, the officer went to an apartment building in the 4900 block of G Street SE, the site of a recent homicide, to follow up on that investigation. The officer tried to stop and speak with Brown, who led the officer outside the building, where the two tussled. Brown pulled out a handgun and refused to drop it.
